mean girls monday: week 4

Outfit:
Michael Kors sweater | Luisa Via Roma skirt | YSL shoes | River Island hoop earrings | River Island handbag | Etsy (BluegrassSassLC) bow

It is Week 4 of Mean Girls Monday and this quote is from the beginning of the movie on Cady's first day of school. It's kind of random and kind of hilarious. I've been seeing a lot of wire necklaces in the shape of states or countries lately, and I thought they would be perfect to compliment this quote. As for the outfit, I was inspired by Cady's light pink and periwinkle blue color combination, which she wore a couple of times in the movie. The cut of the skirt is more updated, and instead of a ribbed henley tee, I used a pretty pink cashmere sweater instead.

"There's a Mean Girls quote for everything," I like to say. To celebrate the movie's 10 year anniversary (it came out on April 30, 2004), I'm doing a series on Sunny Sweetheart called Mean Girls Monday, where I share an outfit inspired by a quote from the movie! While the classic quotes are 2004, the outfit will be "updated" to make it look fashionable in 2014. Check back for next week's Mean Girls Monday with a new outfit inspired by one of the iconic quotes!

orange lace shorts

Swank shorts | American Eagle shirt | Nordstrom tank | Sperry boat shoes | Michael Kors watch | Swank bracelets | Ray-Ban sunglasses

I'm currently in Seattle, where it has been cloudy and chilly every day, but that wouldn't stop me from wearing shorts! I probably looked ridiculous walking around, but I couldn't resist the orange lace shorts. Probably best to wear them before my tan fades, which, looking at the forecast, won't be long. I paired the orange and cream colored shorts with a ton of other blue pieces and metallic accessories. Summer clothes are my favorite!

Happy Sunday!

electric green chinos & orange stripes

Nordstrom tank (similar) | J. Crew shorts (new colors) | Nordstrom belt (similar) | Kate Spade bag (similar here, and this one has a metal bow!) | Michael Kors watch | Forever 21 bracelets | Nordstrom sweater | Ray-Ban sunglasses | Sperry boat shoes (this exact pair happens to be on sale!)

It's so sunny today! I got to take my bright green chino shorts out of the drawers for the first time in a long time. The warm weather makes me want to do anything but be inside, but unfortunately I have a final to study for this afternoon. Maybe I'll study outside on the grass :) it's crazy to think that tomorrow I have my last actual class as a college student! And only two more finals and my thesis paper. So, so, so weird letting that sink in.

I also love the color combo today. Orange and green have been a favorite color of mine since I saw Blair wearing the orange-green outfit on Gossip Girl (beginning-ish of season 1, where Blair and Nate break up, I can't find a photo of that outfit online). I like to put the colors together if I get a chance!

blue ray-bans!

Wellllll, you can see my friend Lauren (friend and today's photographer) in the reflection, haha.

Ray-Ban sunglasses | Free People dress (similar) | Martin + Osa cardigan (similar) | Report flats (similar) | Nordstrom bracelets (similar) | Entourage earrings

I am so loving my new blue mirrored aviators. I went to Nordstrom 4 times to look at them before actually making the purchase! They have already becoming a favorite in my accessory collection, even if they are a little crazy. I don't care, I love them anyway! It took my a while to admit that because they are a newer trend and a little "out there" ... also, my ex-boyfriend from high school used to wear mirrored aviators and I thought he looked like the biggest tool. Haha. So....

I'm also wearing the earrings from Leslie that came in my blog swap gift!! Love the subtle addition of orange next to the blue.

friday's fancies - hit the slopes

This week's Friday's Fancies theme with long distance loving is Hit the Slopes ("your best apres-ski outfit!") I've never skied ... being a dancer, skiing is high injury risk - I've even had to sign dance team contracts saying I wouldn't ski. However, sometimes I go with a group of people to my friend's cabin up in the mountains. (See this post and this post!) While only some of us ski, the non-skiers hang out and relax. Here's an outfit I would wear if I had these pieces in my wardrobe:

tiny polka dots

Shirt J. Crew Jeans Nordstrom Silver Bracelet Tiffany & Co. Chevron Bracelet Nordstrom (similar) Flats Report (similar) Earrings Nordstrom Belt Nordstrom (similar) Necklace Muses & Rebels Nail Polish OPI "Quarter of a Cent-Cherry"

I just got my nails done today! I even had little rhinestones put on the ring finger nails. :) Love me some sparkle in any way possible. My toes are purple sparkles too but you can't see them because it's winter and I'm wearing flats. I'm so sick of winter. I'm also sick of these jeans - have you noticed I've been rocking this pair quite a lot lately? Wellllll, it's the only pair of jeans I brought home. (Besides my brown skinnies, which, don't go with everything). The more I wear these jeans, the more I question why I only brought one skirt so I don't have to wear jeans, then question if I should wear a dress, then end up deciding to wear these jeans.

It's basically a whole lot of indecision going on inside my head.

2 1/2 more weeks, then I'll be back at school with my full closet.

PS - here's a closeup of my nails:

A dose of sparkle is never too much!

sweets & snacks - recipes for 4th of july

With barbecues and parties celebrating our lovely Independence Day coming up this week, I am seeing USA-themed everything, everywhere. I was perusing the web for Fourth of July recipes, and here are some I found!

These are super cute, and the colored cake make it so much fun!

Sweet Tooth: Fourth of July Treats
Nutella? Yes, please! This post on laurenconrad.com has a few other 4th of July snack ideas too!

4th of July snacks
I think I'm going to try these! Looks like a good mix of salty and sweet.

Happy almost-Fourth-of-July!

checkers

My favorite pattern is checkers. I like checkered bedding, notebooks, and especially clothes! It is a classic print that is reincarted every season. I enjoy the pattern year-round, but love seeing the pattern more often in the spring.

You can never go wrong with a traditional, checkered button-down! A button-down in blue gingham has been on my shopping list for a while now, but other colors like green and light pink other good options.

Branching out from button-downs is nice too! I love this Marc Jacobs skirt - perfect for work or dressing up - and this retro swimsuit is adorable.

turquoise hi-low shirt

Shirt: Free People Jeans: DL 1961 Flats, beaded bracelets (right wrist): Nordstrom Bracelets (left wrist): F21 Watch: Michael Kors

Today I am wearing a "hi-low shirt." The style is also known as the "mullet." Shirts, skirts, and dresses with a shorter cut in the front and a longer cut in the back are very trendy right now. I decided to subtly dip a toe into the trend with this shirt - which would be perfect with leggings as well. Here are a few dresses and skirts in the style:

I wonder how long this trend will last! I don't mind it for the season, as long as the mullet haircut doesn't come back in style...What do you think of the hi-low/mullet trend?

seeing the sun

Sunglasses, hoodie: H&M Shorts: Rock & Republic Bracelets: ASOS Shoes: Sperry

This outfit isn't particularly interesting, but I was so excited to be wearing shorts that I had to post it! Being in  Denver, the altitude makes the sun feel a little warmer. I spent a very relaxing morning laying out and reading The Hunger Games book 2 (anyone else obsessed with the series?). I might look a little out of place wearing shorts in March, but it is currently snowing in Spokane so I need to get my fix before I go back to school. I restrained myself from wearing flip flops and wore my Sperrys to not look too out of place.

Also, I got this jacket at H&M, but I just realized it looks like an American Apparel knockoff. Oops? Haha. Whatever, I like the color. It goes nicely with the tribal bracelets! It is a perfect example of a hoodie I'd throw on in the summer when it gets chilly at night. I can not WAIT for summer weather! Who's with me on that one?!
