new lululemon clothes :)

I went to Lululemon today with the intention of exchanging leggings for the blue pair in the photo above....and walked out with a tank and jacket! #Typical

I was so excited with my purchases that I just had to share them on the blog! The blue crop leggings are the Run: Inspire Crop IIs and will be perfect for running. I have a pair of the Wunder Under crops and these are tighter and lighter, but still just as comfortable. They also make my legs slightly resemble an avatar :) haha.

The No Limits tank has an attached sports bra so it's basically two-in-one! The tank is made of a mesh, sweat-wicking material and the bra is basically like the Free to Be sports bras they have. This will be perfect to wear when I teach Zumba classes - doesn't show sweat, looks cute, and is super comfy! I also love how the sides dip low so it shows off the sports bra.

Andddd finally, the neon pink Forme Jacket. I usually either wear my Nike dance team jacket, my North Face fleece, or a crew neck sweatshirt as my "outerwear" for the gym. (Usually I need to wear a combo of the three in the winter - it gets cold in Spokane!) Now I have the perfect jacket! I like starting my cardio with a light jacket on anyways and this bright pink one will make my workouts all the more fun.

What do you wear when you work out? Are you a Lululemon fan too?

zumba set list 11/06/12

It's been a while since I've posted a Zumba set list! (You can see previous ones here and here.) I have been teaching Zumba once a week on campus for almost nine weeks now! It's fun and a great workout.

organic cinnamon bread ... can I say, YUM?!

I have been a big fan of Dave's Killer Bread, an amazing organic bread company. The bread is made from organic ingredients and tastes good. Some breads have seeds around the crust - the perfect texture for toast and peanut butter (one of my usual meals).

Today I bought Dave's Killer Bread's SIN DAWG at the grocery store. It is a cinnamon bread roll made from all organic ingredients.
Healthy, USDA-certified organic cinnamon bread?! That actually tastes good?!
Yes. It is great. I love a good cinnamon roll, but if I have one, I usually only eat part of it - not to just save a few calories, but because I feel heavy afterward. I had a serving of the Sin Dawg for dessert before dance team practice. One gym workout and a 2 1/2 hour dance practice later, I still felt great. It didn't zap my energy or make me feel sluggish at all!
One serving = 200 calories, 5 grams of protein

Also, I've been replicating the omelets that the chef at the school cafeteria makes. They're really good, but since I'm a senior and don't have a meal plan anymore, I tried it out for myself! I use either one or two eggs, about 1/5 of a bell pepper, some chopped pieces of a tomato, and chopped pieces of half a slice of turkey bacon. I put a little bit of cheddar cheese and it tastes just like sophomore year. ;)
One serving = about 275 calories, 19 grams of protein

dance for parkinson's zumbathon

Today a dance club on campus did a Zumbathon for Dance for Parkinson's, and I got to teach the first half of Zumba! It was a lot of fun and we got to dance for a good cause. :)

post-workout snacks

I realized it has been a while since I had done a post related to health/fitness, so I want to write about some good snacks to eat post-workout! Depending on the amount of calories burned, different things will be good for your body. Yesterday I taught a Zumba class and had a 2.5 hour dance team practice with a workout - according to My Fitness Pal app, I burned over 1,200 calories! That day I burned a LOT more than a usual workout day, but when I got home, I needed to replenish my muscle tissues and glycogen stores!

Here are a few post-workout snack ideas (note: I'm not a professional; I just enjoy learning tidbits about health from class, magazines, online, etc.) From what I've read and heard, the key is having food that contains carbohydrates and protein.

Water

Water isn't food, but some H2O is especially important after a sweat session to remain hydrated. To me, there's nothing better than an ice-cold glass of water after a long run.

Chocolate Milk

One of the Gold's Gym trainers told me that chocolate milk has the best ratio of carbs to protein to repair your body. If you're working out at a high intensity for 60 minutes or longer, chocolate milk is your friend. AND an excuse to have chocolate!

Whole Grains

My nutrition professor said that if you're going to eat starchy carbs (like whole grain bread or pasta) that the best time to do so is between 45 minutes and two hours post-workout. That is when your body will really take advantage of the nutrients and use it to its benefit. A slice of whole grain toast (my favorite brand is Dave's Killer Bread) with an egg or spread with natural peanut butter is one of my go-to snacks.

Protein Smoothie

Many gyms or smoothie bars often have deceivingly unhealthy smoothies that are loaded with sugar, artificial fruit, and excess protein and carbohydrates. By blending your own at home, you know exactly what you're putting into your body! Check this post for my protein smoothie recipe.

Fruits and vegetables are always another smart choice for low-calorie carbs, and adding hummus or natural peanut butter is a healthy way to make a snack with both carbs and protein. -- And YES, fruits and veggies are carbohydrates too! Carbs ARE good for you! (Well, natural fruits, veggies, and whole grains...)

Eating the right food is crucial after a workout, but more importantly, a healthy lifestyle! Let me know what other healthy snacks you like to eat!

SALADS

I've never really been one to make a large amount of a meal to break into multiple meals throughout the week. I know it's practical, but even I'm too lazy to cook chicken (more like afraid I'll undercook the meat) even though it could last a whole week. Lately, however, I've been making salads ahead of time so I can have it ready to go for dinner. This week I even brought salads to work for lunch! (So much cheaper than buying food every day...)
I chopped up one Roma tomato, one orange bell pepper, and one avocado.
I made a salad with lettuce, avocado, and grapes (so good!) for Tuesday....
...and one with lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, and avocado on Wednesday. I drizzled olive oil instead of dressing on both.
Then I stored the remaining crudites in storage containers. Now when I feel lazy about preparing food, I don't have an excuse to skimp on salad!

zumba set list - july 21st

I subbed another Zumba class this morning. It was one of my favorite classes I ever taught! The class was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There were lots of cheers during the dancing, which makes me feel good that people enjoy the class. Here is my set list from today:

the color run 5k

I found out about The Color Run via Pinterest and I really really really want to do it!
Bright colors make me happy! The Seattle Color Run.
Basically, it is a 5k walk/run where you show up in a white shirt and they blast you with color at each "k" along the way. I think having the color would make the race a lot more fun than a regular one. I mean, how couldn't it?
And it was all yellow! #thecolorrun
#thecolorrun

Doesn't this look like FUN?! I wish there were going to be a run in my city, but unfortunately there isn't! I juuuust might make a road trip out of it to do one this summer. And if I do, I'll keep you posted ;)

Learn more from the website and see more photos on the Pinterest page (where I got these photos from).

zumba set list - 06/12/12

Last night I taught a free Zumba class at school! It was a lot of fun and I was surprised with the turnout of students, considering it is summer. One thing I love about Zumba is the upbeat, fun music and how it inspires people to move! Here is my set list from last night:
Do you like these songs? Any suggestions for my next class?

hot yoga - my first week

.

I just completed my first week of hot yoga! I went 5 out of 7 days this week on my first week of a one month trial. I've never taken a yoga class, so jumping right into a new exercise in a 105-degree room scared me a bit. I went with a friend for the first class to ease my nerves, and it wasn't as bad as I thought! Here is how each class went:

Class 1: Began sweating the moment I stepped in the room. Tried to get used to the heat, but rarely got dizzy. Was able to enjoy the feeling of yoga and do the poses pretty well. Was excited to try it again!

Class 2: This was probably my best class of all five I've taken so far. I took this one in the evening and I think it's a good time for me. My friend didn't come this time, so I stood near the back so I could watch other people and see what the poses were (the instructor only gives directions in this class and doesn't do the poses with us).

Class 3: Took this class in the morning and it was pretty good. I definitely wore the wrong tank top - it was cotton and very stiff - so I decided from then on to wear just a sports bra and shorts!

Class 4: Went to a class the next day in the morning again and I liked it. Not too much to add, it was pretty similar to the other classes. However my back felt stronger and more flexible in the spine series!

Class 5: The studio today was very packed and the room felt hotter than usual. Most of the class took breaks, and I laid down more than I had in the previous four classes. The instructor turned the heat down a couple of times - probably due to the extra amount of body heat - but focusing on breathing really helped me feel better. I  also had not eaten enough or drank enough water earlier today, so that made it harder for me. Everything considered, it went well.

I love finding new ways to exercise, and I've been wanting to try yoga for a while. I feel so calm and relaxed during the class and it is a nice way to unwind. I also feel my balance and core muscles getting stronger! As of now, I feel I am getting the benefits of hot yoga.

One week down, three to go! I'll keep you updated and write a review post when I am done with my one month trial!

youtube exercise videos

About a week ago, a friend and I decided to exercise in our apartment instead of going to the gym or running outside - mostly because it was raining! (Icky.) We did a whole Zumba "class" (one-on-one private lesson! haha) and then looked on YouTube to find more ways to exercise at home. How did we not think of this before?! This is amazing! So many fit, inspiring people upload some great workouts online that range from a few minutes to an hour. And it's all free!

Two of my favorite workouts on YouTube thus far are ones from Blogilates or The Butt Bible. They're great!

Here are a few great ones from Blogilates [click the links above since the video shows up small on this post]:
This is a short video, to What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction!! The song itself is so catchy and it's fun to work out to it! Because it's only a couple of minutes, it's nice to squeeze in if I get really busy.

I've been trying to tone up my legs lately, and this one is great for that!

This ab workout is AWESOME. It uses paper plates similar to those disc-things, so it's easy to do at home! I was sore the next day after this one.

A few great Butt Bible workouts:
This is the one my friend first showed to me. It's awesome! I felt the burn, and it is great for your butt AND quads and hamstrings.

This one adds weight resistance. The girl is very motivating - different than the girl from Blogilates - she says things like "enjoy that cramping muscle feeling" and "what are you going to eat for dinner? Not a cheeseburger!" It makes me laugh and keeps me going.

This workout uses weights for part of it and works arms, back, and core. The crunches and back exercises were some of my favorites.

Have you tried any of these? If you know of any other great workouts to try, let me know! I'm always looking to try something new. :)

nine simple ways to exercise for free

With the costs of gym fees, fitness classes, and club memberships, exercising can get expensive. Purchasing new equipment, shoes, and clothes for the type of exercise can add up too! During the school year, our gym membership is built into our tuition, and I take fitness classes on campus for 1-credit so they are built into my schedule. Now that rock climbing, Zumba, and Dance Team are over for the year, I need to find other ways to exercise! Luckily the campus gym membership is super inexpensive during the summer, but there are plenty of ways to exercise for free (or really cheap!)

1. Run, jog, or walk outside
Try running on sidewalks, on trails, or at a park. Walking your dog counts too!
2. Lift weights - or "weights" - at home
Sports stores, Target, Wal-Mart, and many other places sell free weights that are usually inexpensive. Invest in one or two different sets of weight and use them to do what you'd normally do at the gym at home. Or, find other "weights" around the house, like soup cans or heavy books! Also, other small equipment like a jump rope or a resistance band don't take up much room and are very portable.

3. Use your own body weight for strength exercises
Basic calisthenics like crunches, push-ups, tricep dips, squats, and planks are just a few different exercises you can use with just your body weight. Make sure to do a variety to get the best results!
crunches
4. Fun, outdoor recreational activities
A few ideas...
-frisbee
-capture the flag
-soccer/football
-running around with kids (great if you're babysitting)

5. Swimming in a nearby lake or pool
Cool off in the water and get some exercise while doing it! Swimming burns the same amount of calories in the same amount of time as running, but works different muscles. This is a great way to cross-train if you're running or jogging often. Just make sure that wherever you swim, it is safe!

6. Walk or bike to work
Especially if it's a nice day, walking or biking instead of driving will be refreshing. It also saves gas, money, and helps the environment.
biking
7. Dance in your room
Even before I got my Zumba instructor license, I would do Zumba at home! There are Zumba Fitness video games, but I just like to do it without a game. I either memorize the dances to the songs I am teaching or the ones I have taken and do them, or learn one from YouTube. Last week, I did Zumba in my living room with a friend! So much fun.

8. Watch exercise videos online
Speaking of watching videos online, YouTube is a great place to find exercise tutorials. There are SO many videos and channels that it would take its own post to list them all. (Maybe this will be another post soon? Haha stay tuned!)

9. Search online for "free ____ class in _____"
Fill in the blanks with your desired class and then city and see if there are any free classes in your area! Try a new class from a different place every time to save a bunch of money while trying new things.

There you go! Nine simple ways to exercise for free (or almost free!) These are especially great for summer because of the nice weather. If you have any more ways to exercise that you'd like to add, feel free to add yours below!

arbonne 7-day body cleanse, week review

I finished my Arbonne 7-day body cleanse yesterday! I am very pleased with this past week. At the beginning of the cleanse, I had mentioned that at the end of the semester I had not been eating very well (finals week means coffee, coffee, coffee; end-of-the-year parties mean sweets, sweets, sweets!) I didn't realize how poorly I was eating until I started the cleanse. By limiting almost all of my processed foods, I had more energy (no coffee needed), and felt better in general. Basically, crappy food weighs you down after a while. Moderation is key!

I would start my morning with two eggs. They taste great and kept me full until lunch.
My typical lunch looked something like this:
Prochiutto with cantaloupe, strawberries, and cherry tomatoes with mozzarella. (Trader Joe's has really good marinated mozzarella balls - I cut them in half and ate each half with a cherry tomato).

Snacks were usually an apple with natural peanut butter, raw veggies, or two tbsp. of sunflower seed butter.

My dinner usually looked something like this:
These turkey burgers (again, from Trader Joe's) are amazing! The ingredients are just turkey, salt, and rosemary seasoning. I cooked it on a pan in olive oil and they were juicy and crispy. Super satisfying and only 180 calories! No bun or cheese needed.
A colorful side salad with cherry tomatoes, avocado, carrots, and sweet bell peppers tossed in olive oil added more healthy fats in a low-calorie way.

My cravings for chocolate were minimal, which is crazy because I usually crave chocolate/sweets every day! Instead I was craving real, whole, clean food. I looked forward to the turkey burger and salad every day when I came home from work!

I'm really glad I did this cleanse. It was a healthy way to keep me in check and stick with clean eating. It's not like I was going to "give up on" the cleanse or waste my money by preventing my body from cleaning by eating poorly!

Has anyone else done a cleanse? If so, how did it go? Let me know if you have any recommendations of other cleanses!

arbonne 7-day body cleanse, days 1 & 2

I am starting my second day of the Arbonne 7-day Body Cleanse. So far, I feel great! What I like about this cleanse is that you still get to eat when you do it. The cleanse will aid to eliminate toxins and detoxify the system.

Being a college student who just finished up the semester, this is perfect for me right now - the end of the semester involved finals week, barbecues, and graduation parties, which meant more coffee, processed foods, and baked goods than usual. At first I didn't know why I was getting stomach aches, but quickly realized it was what I was putting in my body that made me feel so crappy.

Enter the cleanse!
The box contains 7 mini bottles of the cleanse itself. You pour the liquid into 32 ounces of water and drink it throughout the day. During the day, try to eat as healthy as possible - no processed foods - to help aid the cleanse and clean out your body.
This is the water bottle filled with the cleanse and 32 ounces of water
On day one, I went for a run in the morning. What I ate:
Breakfast: 2 organic eggs with salt and pepper
Lunch: 1/2 a fruit protein smoothie (no milk added)*
Snack: Pulled pork meat, lettuce leaves
Dinner: 1 whole-grain waffle and 1 slice of organic wheat bread with natural peanut butter
Drank the cleanse mixture and water throughout the day (no coffee, woohoo!)

*Only had half of the smoothie because I'm almost out of ingredients! Time to go grocery shopping...

I was going to try to stay away from bread as much as possible, seeing as it is processed, but realized that my calorie count was way too small for the day and I needed to get it up. Before dinner I had only eaten about 500 calories (plus burned some off on a run). I'm hoping just a smidge of whole-grains won't hurt!

Click here if you're interested in trying the cleanse out for yourself! I've had friends that do it and like it (plus my friend's sister works for Arbonne!) So far, I've only heard good things about this product.

Check back early next week for my full review of the cleanse!

low-calorie snacks

Snacking is often strategic or mindless. Strategic snacking would be having a light amount of food to tide you over till your next meal, and mindless would be snacking too heavily, or, just to snack. There are times when I fall into both categories. Sometimes I have an apple (45 calories) with a slice of cheese (80 calories) for a quick and filling 125 calorie snack. Sometimes I have an apple with cheese, then some slices of turkey lunch meat, then tortilla chips, then a cookie ... and my snack becomes mindless. I usually only mindlessly snack when I am bored, hurried, or stressed. It's a habit I'm trying to break, and I know I'm not alone!

Here are some healthy, low-calorie snack ideas!

Fruit - fruits and vegetables already contain water, so that means extra hydration when you snack on some! Apples and bananas are great for throwing in your bag on your way out the door. I also like to make my own fruit salad with strawberries, cantaloupe, grapes, and pineapple. I slice it beforehand and put it in a clear container. When I open the fridge, it seems like a lot less work to have fruit because it is already washed and cut up. I also don't have to feel like I need to throw away the rest if I don't finish it.
Some ideas: Strawberries, watermelon, pears, apples, cantaloupe, pineapple, grapes, blueberries mixed with yogurt, fruit smoothie
Raw Veggies - I bought a small-ish sized bag of baby carrots at one of the places to eat on campus recently. The whole bag of carrots was only 35 calories but packed with nutrients and the water carrots already contain. I only had half of the bag before it filled me up! This was healthy food that my body will use for fuel for only 17.5 calories - it beats eating a handful of chocolate covered pretzels (approx. 220 calories) that my body won't use for fuel and will leave me still hungry.
Some ideas: bell peppers with hummus, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, cooked corn, baked asparagus sprinkled with parmesean cheese, Romaine salad mix (I eat it plain for a quick, crunchy, snack)
Nuts and Nut Butters - Nuts are high in the good fats. Just a handful of nuts will give you a protein and energy boost. Nut butters are also a wonderful way to add taste. Spread a nut butter on whole grain bread for a sandwich or toast, on apple slices, sliced celery, or whole grain crackers.
Some ideas: cashews, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower butter, pecans
Proteins - There are plenty of ways to sneak protein into snacks. We covered nuts and nut butters above, but there are also other protein options! Greek Yogurt is filled with protein and tastes great mixed with berries. Turkey slices are light and filling - make a lettuce wrap by rolling a sheet of lettuce around a few slices of turkey, a bit of cheese, and mustard. Half of a low-calorie protein smoothie is another way to add protein. (For the kind I make, a whole one is a meal replacement for me. So try half for a snack!)
Some ideas: lettuce wraps with lunch meat, yogurt, nuts and nut butters, cheese, rice and beans, avocado spread on a whole wheat English muffin

Last but not least ... water! Water isn't food, but your body needs it every day to be hydrated and function properly!

I hope this gives you some ideas for smart snacking! Try your best to eat the nutrients your body really craves, and don't get too carried away with counting calories. This is quality over quantity. Listen to your body to see if you are actually hungry or are just snacking just to snack. Doing so will keep your body fueled and performing at its best!

Have any more tips? Feel free to add yours below!

how-to: low-calorie protein smoothie

Every morning I start my day with a smoothie for breakfast. Depending on the day, I either have a fruit smoothie or a blended coffee drink. One serving of the protein powder I use has 20 grams of protein, so it keeps me full for hours! The powder itself is only 110 calories, too, making it very low-calorie.

Many smoothie shops add artificial juices, concentrates, and sweeteners to their drinks. I'd rather use as few and "real" foods as possible!

For my fruit smoothie, I use one serving of protein powder, 3/4 cup water, 1 cup frozen, unsweetened berries, and a splash of milk.
If I am starting my day much earlier than usual (ahem, early classes), then I trade out the berries for half a packet of these Starbucks to-go iced coffee mixers. Adding ice to this drink tastes similar to a blended coffee drink! (Occasionally I'll put in a little dark chocolate syrup if I want it to be sweeter).
All you need to do is blend it together and you're ready to go! It only takes a few minutes, and you can bring the smoothie with you when you leave, so it's perfect for getting ready fast!

active wear

I thought I'd switch up my usual outfit post today from "regular" clothes to gym clothes! I go to the gym often, whether it is for dance team, zumba, rock climbing, running, etc. Many times I have to change quickly before/after class - or just wear my gym clothes to class - so I thought I'd show an example of what I'd wear on one of those days.
Shirt: Victoria's Secret PINK Leggings: Lulu Lemon Shoes: Asics Water bottle: Nalgene
I love these Lulu Lemon leggings. They are great for moving and sweating, but also can be worn with regular clothes as well! Basic black matches everything, and since the material is somewhat thick, they are warmer than most cotton leggings in the winter.

This top is so comfortable - I have it in two colors! It's great for lounging around or warming up at the gym. It doesn't necessarily look like a "gym t-shirt" so I can "get away with it" in class. After warming up, I can take it off to just wear a tank.

As for the sneaks, I've been Asics fan for years. They are great for running long distances and last a good amount of time. Plus the pink is a nice color, too. :) I always keep a hair tie on my wrist if I'm going to the gym so I can put my hair up, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.

What do you wear to the gym? What are your favorite brands of active wear?

PS - In the process of creating a shopping guide for active wear - check back for it later this week!
