10 Reasons Why You Should Travel After College

There is a lot of pressure put on college graduates to get jobs right out of school. Whether it’s coming from family, friends, professors, the media, or yourself, the stress of landing a 9-5 by graduation day can be substantial. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right? Go to college, get a job, and then life will work out. For some people, that’s fine and that’s okay. But for you, there is that voice in the back of your head that won’t let the idea of traveling after college go away. There are so many ways to go abroad after college, though fear and excuses often get in the way of those travel dreams. Since almost everyone will tell you all the reasons why you shouldn’t travel after college, I’m here to give you ten reasons on why you should.

1.   Because you have the time.
You don’t need to jump into the corporate grind first thing Monday morning after graduation. You have the rest of your life to work. Taking some time off to go abroad, have new experiences, and maybe even find yourself is worth it. There will still be jobs to apply for when you get back.

2.   Because you aren't tied down.
When else will you not be tied down to anything? When you get a full-time, entry-level job that gives you maybe two weeks of unpaid vacation per year? When you have an apartment lease and bills to pay? When you get married and start a family? Nothing is wrong with any of that, but if you want to travel, it is much easier to travel now, when you aren’t tied down to anything.

3.   Because it makes you more marketable when you apply to jobs in the future.
Study abroad or travel boosts your resume and often makes you a more qualified candidate compared to those without international experience. When you’re back on your turf you’ll be able to apply all the things you learned abroad to your future job interviews.

4.   Because you learn much more by seeing, exploring, and experiencing a foreign place than reading about it or looking at pictures.
When captioning photos of my travels, I always think, “This picture does not do it justice.” There is nothing more liberating than actually being somewhere in person. The feeling of jumping off a boat into the Adriatic Sea, with the rush of adrenaline and chills going up your spine as you hit the gorgeous, crystal clear water is 100 times better than simply looking at a photo of the turquoise ocean surrounding the islands of Croatia.

5.   Because you're young and your body is able to handle pretty much anything.
Your body is likely more capable of handling jet lag, outdoor activities, late nights partying, etc. now than it will be when you’re older.

6.   Because you can still take advantage of discounts when you’re young.
Most students and young travelers (usually under 26) are eligible to receive discounts. Whether it be airfare, transportation, lodging, or other fees associated with travel, take advantage of your young age to score some major deals.

7.   Because there are plenty of options to travel after college, and they don't have to be expensive.
On that note, budget travel makes going abroad more feasible than you think. You won’t mind staying in a $12/night hostel in Istanbul now while you’re young, but you probably will when you’re older. There are hostels and websites such as Couchsurfing and Airbnb to save you some cash on accommodations. If vacationing or backpacking still seem to stretch your budget too far, then get a job overseas: you can be a tour guide, intern, Peace Corps volunteer, English teacher, au pair, the list goes on. And you don’t have to go to Western Europe, Japan, or Australia, which tend to be more expensive. Try Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, or Central America. There are so many places in the world to see, and not all of them will cost you an arm and a leg to see them.

8.   Because it opens you up to a whole new view on life.
When you travel somewhere new, you become much more understanding of the world by experiencing new cultures firsthand. The skills you will strengthen while traveling will carry on with the rest of your life. You will feel and become more independent.

9.   Because it makes you happy.
There is a reason behind the saying, “Travel is the only thing you buy, that makes you richer.” People tend to be happier in the long run by spending money on experiences like travel instead of material items.

10.  Because if not now, when?
If you make excuses or wait for the “right time,” the right time will never come. The time is now. Start planning your trip and make it happen. What are you waiting for?

4 of the best "in your 20s" articles

There are so many "in your 20s" articles these days, ranging on everything from self-reflection to being young and careless. Here are four of my favorites from four of my favorite sites:

This one resonates with me, especially numbers 3 and 4. Don't settle, don't settle, don't settle.

Anything involving money and finance often goes over my head. That kind of stuff is just not how I'm wired. This article is helpful to start planning now to avoid money issues later.

A more self-reflective look at little tweaks you can make to improve your approach to things.

mean girls monday: week 1

Wildfox t-shirt | ASOS skirt | Max & Chloe ring and bangle | Kate Spade initial charm bracelet | Kate Spade pumps | Betsey Johnson handbag

Today marks the first edition of Mean Girls Monday and I am very excited to share with you my outfit inspired by the quote, "Get in loser, we're going shopping." I couldn't resist the super trendy "shopping is my cardio" tee from Wildfox, and added "Mean Girls" elements like a pink flare skirt, pointed pumps, and personalized jewelry. Little bows on the handbag and the pumps add an extra girly touch to the outfit. This is something I could see a 2014 Regina George wearing, don't you think?

"There's a Mean Girls quote for everything," I like to say. To celebrate the movie's 10 year anniversary (it came out on April 30, 2004), I'm doing a series on Sunny Sweetheart called Mean Girls Monday, where I share an outfit inspired by a quote from the movie! While the classic quotes are 2004, the outfit will be "updated" to make it look fashionable in 2014. Check back for next week's Mean Girls Monday with a new outfit inspired by one of the iconic quotes!

success & happiness

I gave another speech for class today (I feel like I write a lot about my class speeches on here, haha) about defining personal success. I cited this article and I definitely recommend reading it! It was very inspiring and has even helped guide me in my job search. Basically, the author simply asks,

How happy are you?

The author pretty much states that if you are happy, you are successful.

You may have to sacrifice some parts in life for others, but if you are happy, you are probably doing things right for yourself. It's a good thing to ask yourself if you're happy overall. For me, I'm pretty happy right now. I am so comfortable being at school, with great friends, doing fun things and learning a lot. I'm nervous for the upcoming change (graduation...) but have been reflecting on what I want out of the beginning of my post-college life, and how it will make me happy.

Anyways, like I said in my speech, you deserve happiness; you deserve success. And if you define success based on happiness, you'll be both. :)
I know everyone defines success differently. How do you define success? Do you agree with the article?

Have a happy night :)

chin up buttercup

This week has been a little rough. However, some pretty quote images and some good music (just found out about The Lumineers? I like them! Kind of like Mumford & Sons, if that's your style) can brighten a mood a little bit.

And I just went to the gym and had dance practice. Those endorphins always kick up a mood!

mightybell - steps for following your dreams

Large_job1

"I love my job."

That's what everyone's career dream is, right? To do work that they love to do? To enjoy their time at work and leave feeling satisfied? That's what I want out of a job.

I'm still in school, but I'm currently applying and interviewing for internships. I want to learn more about my field of study and see what I really want to do! I truly enjoy the classes I'm taking for my majors and minors right now, and I am ready to apply what I learned to the real world. While I'm still figuring out my next internship, I am also thinking long-term. What do I want to do after graduation? Where do I want to live? Do I want to work in one specific field, work with people, or start my own business?

So many unanswered questions - which is exciting! (Now, if I were a senior, these questions would probably be really nerve-wracking. Good thing I am not quite there yet.)

I found out about Mightybell recently, which is a social site to create goals and experiences and organize big goals into incremental steps. It is pretty simple and easy to use. I really like sites like this that give tips on thinking about the big picture, but Mightybell is the most unique one I've found yet! Also, most "experiences" are free. Another plus.
Example of a question the site asks to fit an experience to your interests
The "experience" I am participating in is called Kristen Walker's Levo League's 7 Steps to Turn Your Passion into a Full-Time Career. That sounds pretty nice, right?

Step one is about visualizing your end goal. Step one mentions, "Imagine the clothes you would wear and the layout of your dream office. Take a mental snapshot of your business card, and feel the pride that will surge through you when you hand it to people saying, 'I'm a insert your dream job title.'" You can't see the next steps until you've completed the previous one! So I currently don't know what steps 3-7 are.

So far, I find this 7-step experience really motivating. It makes me excited to keep learning and growing, and hopefully one day, if my end goal is still the same, I will make my vision come true. My dreams? They're going to happen. I know it.

Sunny Sweetheart's 1-year Anniversary!

March 6th marked the 1-year anniversary of my blog!

I missed it by a few days. How did I forget?! Really, Ally? I cannot believe it has already been a year since I began this blog. Time flies so fast.

I originally began blogging because I was so inspired by the blogs I read already. A majority of the blogs I read are fashion-related, and I was just itching to start my own. Two vauge-ish goals I had when starting Sunny Sweetheart were: (1) post at least once a day and (2) do outfit posts.
One of my first layout designs! I like my current design much better.
It took a while to get into the swing of things and find my writing style for the first few weeks. I think most personal bloggers go through that beginning phase of finding their own unique style.

After many sporadic posts - I only wrote once in August - I started posting more regular outfit photos in September 2011. While I didn't post every day for a while, I posted much more often than before. Blogging became an exciting few minutes of my day where I could unwind and focus my thoughts. In February of this year, I decided I wanted to do 29 posts - one for each day of the month! I made a little goal to get through one post a day for the month, and am so happy I did! I really enjoy posting daily and want to keep it up!

I did two outfit posts over the summer, but this is from my first semi-regular one:
I MISS BEING THIS TAN. Winter, you suck sometimes.
I can't believe how much my blog has evolved in its first year. It is crazy to see how my writing changes and improves, and looking back and seeing what I was up to on a certain day. I did a 2011 reflection post and a favorites post at the end of the year, and even in these past few months, it has still evolved a little! Oh, and I have some new ideas and goals up my sleeve, by the way. So stay tuned. ;)

Whether you're a new reader or have been visiting for a while, THANK YOU for stopping by! I truly appreciate all your comments and feedback, and enjoy checking out your blogs too! I hope you have enjoyed reading Sunny Sweetheart, it's been one heck of a year.

conquering the big hill [running]

Today was a gorgeous day of blue skies and no clouds - a rare thing in western Washington. I decided to go out on a quick run before the sun went down, thinking I'd just run a mile or two and call it a day. I also checked the weather forecast, which says that today was the last sunny Seattle day for a while.

So I started running. I'm pretty busy considering it's winter break, and it was so nice to clear my head. The endorphins were pumping and I had passed the 2-mile mark without even thinking about it.

Then I started getting closer to this huge hill. Did you get that? This hill is HUGE. If I wanted to run the hill, I would have to tack on another few miles to get myself back home. I told myself that since I hadn't run the hill in a few months, I could just walk/run it and the rest of the way home.

But I didn't. I ran the whole way! I ran all the way down and all the way up the hill, and my heart rate evened itself out the rest of the way home with the (smaller) hills.

The most brutal part of the hill is about three quarters of the way up when my breathing gets heavy and my muscles are tensing up. I knew I wanted to get up it without stopping though. So in my head, I repeated a phrase I've heard many times,

"You don't think you can, but you can. Your body is stronger than you think."

It sounds SO corny, but it worked! It is a great reminder for any type of physical exercise to just keep pushing, because your body is truly capable of so much.

After the six miles, I was back home. I'm going to sleep like a baby tonight, especially since my muscles haven't had a long run in a while.

michael jordan quote

I was browsing Pinterest recently (new addiction...) and came across this quote by Michael Jordan:

"I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results."

This can apply to multiple areas of life.
School.
Work.
Fitness and health.
Relationships.
Leadership.
Sports and other teams.

If you go to every class but BS that big final paper, you will probably get a mediocre grade. Take time to double-check spelling, grammar, and facts.
If you show up for work every morning hungover from the night before, you will not be as sharp and can miss your shot on that promotion. Have fun, but know where to draw the line.
If you go through the motions at the gym and refrain from challenging yourself, you will not be any closer to your goals. Listen to your body, challenge yourself at the gym, and give it the proper fuel it needs to live long and strong.
If you wait two months without picking up the phone to call a family member, you may find yourself drifting. Two months can turn into 2 years, and then 20 years. Call them now.

You get the picture! Do things whole-heartedly - it's a lot harder to look back thinking you could have done something better and put more effort in when you could just look back and have no regrets.

Blogger Inspiration -- Bib Necklaces

I love to see how other people put together outfits. Everyone has such a cool, unique style that is different.

I've been loving bib necklaces lately, especially this one from Kate Spade:

Seeking inspiration on how to wear it, I looked to two of my favorite bloggers from Atlantic Pacific and The Daybook:
I am a sucker for checkers. I have been looking for a blue and white checkered button-up for ages! I think the necklace pulls this outift together and makes her casual shirt seem more sophisticated with the skirt. Love it.
I love Sydney's style! I really like this purple necklace as well...and I just realized she is also wearing a blue and white checkered button-up! Haha. The color contrast of the purple and blue make the outfit more fun.
While the outfit above isn't necessarily my personal style, I love the pop of color used in this Kate Spade photo.

Two other bib necklace options:

Do you own a bib necklace? How do you wear it?

falling in love quote

When I was in Florence for GIF this summer we had these short church services every Tuesday. There was always a positive vibe in the small chapel and the church leaders would talk about God and life and play songs on an acoustic guitar. The services were so charming and always put me in a good mood. Every week they would give us a piece of paper with an inspirational quote relating to the service. This one stood out to me, and I have it hanging up on my desk:

"Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than
Falling in Love
in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything."
-Pedro Arrupe, S.J.

Whenever I read this quote, I imagine it to be narrated by James Garner (the guy who played the older Noah in The Notebook). Wouldn't that make sense? Right?! Ah, The Notebook is such a good movie.

Anyways, this quote inspires me every day.

Realize your dreams and make them a reality.
